What a border is for

A solid frame does two jobs. On a feed it separates the photograph from the surrounding interface, so a shot with light edges stops bleeding into a white background and a dark shot stops merging with a dark theme. In a portfolio or a print layout it gives the image breathing room and a consistent edge across a set.

The two controls are width and colour, which is deliberately all it takes to keep a series consistent: pick one pair and apply it to every image in the set.

Choosing a width and a colour

Think of width as a proportion of the image rather than a fixed number of pixels. A 40px frame that looks right on a 1000px image is nearly invisible on a 4000px one, so a set of mixed-resolution photos framed at the same pixel width comes out looking inconsistent.

White reads as a gallery mat and lifts darker images; black tightens the composition and suits high-key or pale photographs. A colour sampled out of the image itself keeps the frame from competing with it.

A border is not print bleed. It sits inside the exported image, so a printer trimming to the page will cut into it. If the file is going to a print shop, size the border to survive that trim, or add bleed separately in the layout.
